 Shohreh Shakoory: Biography

Shohreh grew up in the little town of Shahroud, northeast Iran, in the time of the Islamic Republic during which music was prohibited and the only way to learn music was training privately with former professional musicians.

At the age of 20 Shohreh started training on the piano and music theory with Mostafa Pourtorab. She had to travel 8 to 12 hours to reach the teacherís house in Tehran to have lessons, which she did for four years. She went on to train with Hinush Makarian and Vartan Sahakian. Following her training, Shohreh played for Iranian Television and Radio (the national broadcaster) for over four years, recording for childrenís programmes, radio shows and film scores.

She moved to the UK in 1993 where she studied piano with Bernard d'Ascoli, Eleanor Harris, and Roger Green at Trinity College, London, receiving her Teacherís Diploma (LTCL) from Trinity College, London in 1997. Shohreh spent 9 years living in Belgium working as a teacher and performer. She now resides in Canterbury and teaches and performs in the UK and Europe.
